Mission Statement:

There are many excellent web sites that present information on various neuromuscular disorders. When I looked at the web, I was struck by how scattered the information was, and the fact that much of the information is very technical. Therefore, the primary intention of this site is to help integrate different sources and to provide background to help the reader cope with complex medical jargon and methods. I am not trying to be comprehensive and I do not want to be redundant and present information that is already covered elsewhere.

Language is always a problem in medicine, so, I have begun to assemble a basic glossary of common medical terms and to provide some of the concepts involved in basic medicine and illness. When discussing muscle disorders, it only makes sense to have some background to what muscles are and what they do in the body, so I have provided some basic information on the body's muscles and some muscle web pages. Today, we need a basic understanding of the cell and its mechanisms as many of these disorders are expressed through, or mediated by the cell's subparts. Likewise, an understanding of basic genetics and protein synthesis is of help in understanding these disorders. In the future, I will be developing more information on coping and stress management.

Throughout the site, I refer to neuromuscular illnesses, as a group, as NMI (NMIs).

My thanks to Phyllis Javorsky, Edmonton, for proof reading the site. I will be developing and revising the site as time permits. I hope you find this site of help and I am open to suggestions for improvements at the e-mail listed.
